Landscape Planning Course Deepens Youth’s Understanding of the Cultural Heritage Protection Law of Macao

The "2025 Historic Urban Landscape Protection and Planning Course for Youth" organised by the Macao Cultural Heritage Reinventing Studies Association (MCHRSA) and funded by the Cultural Development Fund, the Choi’s Educational and Cultural Fund, and the Henry Fok Foundation continues to make progress. As the course entered its fourth session, Dr. Derrick TAM Chi Kuong, Founding President of the MCHRSA, was invited to deliver a lecture on the Cultural Heritage Protection Law of Macao to participants.

During the session, Dr. Derrick systematically outlined the legislative background, core provisions, and enforcement mechanisms of Macao’s Cultural Heritage Protection Law. Drawing upon case studies from the conservation of Macao’s World Heritage sites, he elucidated the legislation’s pivotal role in preserving historic buildings, safeguarding the transmission of intangible cultural heritage, and coordinating urban landscapes. Through detailed interpretation of the law’s provisions, participants gained deeper insight into how it balances urban development with cultural conservation. Furthermore, Dr. Derrick facilitated group discussions using recent conservation debates as case studies, guiding participants to examine challenges and innovative approaches in legal implementation whilst stimulating diverse perspectives on sustainable heritage management.

The training programme will maintain its dual focus on theory and practice, covering planning methodologies, historical research and policy analysis to equip youths with comprehensive urban landscape conservation abilities.

Participants will present their learning outcomes at a sharing session at M Dimensions on 10 August 2025. Through thematic presentations and engagement with community stakeholders, they will contribute to the future directions for Macao's cultural heritage conservation.
